The Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute (HWNI) is pleased to announce that Joni Wallis, a HWNI member and professor of psychology, has been awarded funding from The Marian C. Diamond & Arnold B. Scheibel Fund in Neuroscience. The fund is an endowment established by Ron Hammer (UC Berkeley class of 1974) and his spouse Sandra Jacobson, in honor of Diamond and her spouse Scheibel. Diamond was a member of HWNI and a pioneering neuroscientist who was recently named a California Woman of the Century. Schiebel was a neuroscientist at UCLA.

Wallis studies neuronal mechanisms underlying high-level cognitive and behavioral processes, with the goal of developing new treatments for psychiatric disorders. She recently became HWNI’s equity advisor, and has been working to make neuroscience at Berkeley more inclusive. In granting her this award, HWNI director Ehud Isacoff noted that Wallis’ research and service “holds great resonance with Marian Diamond’s life story and honors her legacy.” Wallis will receive funds from the endowment for the next five years.
