Michael Yartsev has been selected as one of this year’s six Next Generation Leaders at the Allen Institute for Brain Science. The Next Generation Leaders are distinguished young researchers who will provide feedback in both formal and informal settings to young scientists at the Allen Institute. The program recognizes the outstanding and innovative contributions from emerging scientific leaders and fosters professional development by providing opportunities and informal training on how to serve as scientific advisors.

Next Generation Leaders are selected each year through a competitive application process from a pool of international applicants. This second cohort of Next Generation Leaders includes members from institutions around the globe, each of whom will serve a three-year term on the council.

Yartsev studies the neural circuits underlying spatial behaviors and vocal learning in freely behaving bats. He is an Assistant Professor affiliated with the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute, Department of Bioengineering, and Berkeley Nanosciences and Nanoengineering Institute at UC Berkeley.

“Michael’s research on how spatial information is encoded in the bat nervous system to enable fast and accurate 3D flight has been tremendous,” says Ehud Isacoff, Director of the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute. “His technical advances–including miniaturized, high-density optical, electronic and wireless devices and genetic engineering of bats to introduce genetically-encoded probes and actuators of neural function–hold great promise for teasing apart the neural circuitry and computational logic underlying complex behaviors.”
